Make a splash at the Gunnedah Memorial Pool opening

23 November 2018

Final touches are taking place on multi-million dollar upgrades to the Gunnedah Memorial Pool Complex as Gunnedah Shire Council prepares to reopen the state-of-the-art facility.

As the largest single Council-funded capital works project undertaken in the Shire nears completion, residents are invited to make a splash on Saturday, 15 December 2018 as the facility opens to the public. Entry will be free on Saturday, 15 December and Sunday, 16 December.

Gunnedah Shire Mayor Jamie Chaffey will open the facility at 11.00am, with a number of swimming events to commence shortly after. The 50-metre outdoor pool will then be open to the public for swimming from approximately 12.00pm.

Gunnedah Shire Acting Mayor Rob Hooke said the Gunnedah Memorial Pool Complex was built in the mid-1950s largely by volunteers and community donations, and has been an important community asset for more than 60 years.

“The existing facility was ageing and maintenance costs were rising. With the significant upgrades to the complex, what has been achieved is an amazing renewed facility that will ensure it remains a valued community asset well into the future,” Cr Hooke said.

The project, undertaken by Hines Constructions of Bathurst, saw the construction of a brand new, eight-lane, 50 metre outdoor pool; kids wet play area; new pavilion; filtration system and plant room; as well as a refurbishment to the indoor 25 metre heated pool and improved disability access across the complex.

Cr Hooke said the main feature of the pavilion, the war memorial, has been preserved during the upgrade and will continue to have “pride of place” at the front entrance for all visitors to admire.

Residents have an opportunity to nominate and be one of the first eight to swim in the new outdoor 50 metre pool, directly following the Mayor’s presentation.

Cr Hooke encourages residents to nominate themselves or someone they know for the momentous occasion.

“Nominate for your chance to make history and be one of the first to swim the length of the outdoor pool as part of the opening day,” Cr Hooke said.

“The participants will be gifted an item of memorabilia to mark the occasion.”

An official opening ceremony for the Gunnedah Memorial Pool Complex and dedication will be held in the new year on Thursday, 14 February 2019 to mark 60 years since the opening of the original pool pavilion.
