Weeks of Speed revs up

25 February 2018

Back by popular demand, Gunnedah will be humming once again to the sights and sounds of the 2019 Weeks of Speed festival.

The annual festival will be held over four weekends in March commencing on Sunday, 3 March, at a variety of venues around Gunnedah. The official opening will be held on Saturday, 16 March from 11.00am in the Woolworths Carpark following the Tractor Trek and during Show ‘n’ Shine.

Gunnedah Shire Council’s Tourism Supervisor Chris Frend said there is something speed-related for all tastes, with a number of new events added to the program this year.

“Among the old favourites, some new and exciting events will headline this year’s program, including the Carwash 2380 Motorkhana and Lawn Mower Racing demonstrations to be held at the Gunnedah Showground on March 10, as well as a talk from Red Bull Air Race Pilot Mat Hall at the Gunnedah Airport on Saturday, 23 March,” Mr Frend said.

“The coveted Gunnedah Automotive and Jaycar/Landlink Mount Porcupine Apex Drive Hill Climb is back, where drivers test their skill against the clock, in an adrenalin-filled race to the top.”

Vehicle events range from the Mount Porcupine Hill Climb, car racing and drag racing, to motorbike racing, motorkhana circuits and lawn mower racing demonstrations.

Other events scheduled include the Rural Museum Demonstration Day, greyhound racing, a speed chess challenge, Gunnedah CommUNITY Carnival Day (markets and more), remote control planes and a twilight triathlon.

Weeks of Speed Committee member and Gunnedah Rural Museum volunteer Owen Tydd said Weeks of Speed has grown in popularity over the years.

“What started out as just one week when it first commenced, has now grown so much that is now nearly a month long,” Mr Tydd said.

“There is certainly something for everyone.”
