The $61 million Gunnedah road over rail project, to replace the existing New Street level crossing, is now open to traffic.
The project is funded by the NSW Government, with the construction contract awarded to Daracon Group, a local business in Gunnedah. This is the biggest single infrastructure project in Gunnedah’s history.
The new bridge has been constructed west of the Gunnedah Maize Mill to link the Oxley Highway with Warrabungle Street. In addition to building a new bridge, the project includes:
- upgrade of the Oxley Highway roundabout
- new roundabout at the intersection of Warrabungle and Conadilly streets (completed in December 2015)
- new intersection of Warrabungle and Barber streets
- shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.
The bridge across the rail line will improve freight connectivity and provide safer vehicle access, removing the need for vehicles to directly cross the rail line. It will reduce wait times and congestion on local roads and improve response times for emergency services, as trains regularly pass through the township.
The bridge is expected to be completed by mid-2021.
