The Clifton Road Upgrade Project involves upgrading and sealing the 13.5 km of Clifton Road that is currently unsealed. The works will include widening of 5 km of the Clifton Road, Hogarth Street, Maitland Street and Bulunbulun Road, and the replacement of the bridge on Maitland Street, Breeza across the Mooki River.

The project is valued at $9.6 million and works will be carried out by Gunnedah Shire Council. The NSW Government has allocated $8.56 million for through the Fixing Country Roads Program, and the Federal Government has contributed just over $1 million through the Local Roads Community Infrastructure Fund.

This upgrade will improve safety and productivity, enabling access for Higher Productivity Vehicles. 

The road sealing is complete, the new bridge in Maitland Street has been constructed, and less than 2km of the road widening remains on either side of the bridge. The first coat seal should be placed in September and the road opened to traffic. The final seal should be completed by the end of November, subject to contractor availability.

The project has been impacted by floods and wet weather days. Construction and sealing of the final section on Maitland Street and Bulunbulun Road, Breeza are anticipated to be completed by May.

The second coat seal between Oakey Creek and Round Hill Road has also been delayed by wet weather and is expected to begin following September this year.

The damaged approaches to the Simson Bridge and Breeza bridge are the ongoing subject of the engineering investigation to restore the bridge service and reinforce the abutments and approaches to prevent damage in future events.
